When the polished nations of Middle an d Southern Europe bad at last melted into luxurious softness, and all true nobleness and virtue were fast approaching extinction, it was reserved for this people to pour themselves down over the earth, and infuse their vigorous life and earnest character into-the decaying nations. For this they had received the stern nurture of the North. And at th- appointed time, the barriers were bnrst open, and the flood of Barbarians rolled' down over the inviting South, first to devastate and destroy, then to co-alesce, regenerate, and reconstruct.
