The Dowling measure, lately passed by the New York Senate, gives the park commission power to turn the Speedway into a public park. Of late years, park possibilities within the congested street districts have practically reached their limit. Hence the necessity arose to go beyond the crowded districts for recreation areas. The most notable of these is in the Bronx section. In 19o7 the Parkway Reservation was created, and a Bronx Parkway Commission appointed. Now thirty thousand acres of beautiful country in Westchester and Putnam Counties, owned by New York, are connected with the city by the Bronx River valley, acquired by law. This is a stretch of fifteen and a half miles of river and park lands. Through wise direction and thoughtful planning, the Commission has cleared the river of sewerage, provided a driveway for cars, cleared the region of billboards, and established wooded areas, play fields and facilities for water sports. The MUNICIPAL ART SoCIETY has championed the creation of new breathing spots in various sections of the city. In 19O3, President Calvin Tomkins appointed a committee to make inquiry regarding future needs of parks and park areas. The committee made a report containing several features which have since been adopted. Since 19O2 the SoCIETY has had a Committee on Flowers, Vines and Area Planting, in an endeavor to stimulate among the citizens of our city a love of natural adornment upon the buildings and streets. The Brooklyn Committee on Tuberculosis has been active in its fight against the dread disease. To bring the importance of the matter before the high school pupils of our greater city, the Committee inaugurated...
