What a pleasant surprise to find this film to be completely different from what I had expected! Rather, it's the tale of two boys, barely in their teens, who are secretly getting together at every opportunity to make an amateur video movie that they call Son of Rambow (note the mis-spelling of the name!)
These intrepid wannebe filmmakers are the most unlikely pair in Lee Carter (Will Poulter) - the worst-behaved boy in the school - and Will Proudfoot (Bill Milner) - a quiet, shy lad whose mother is a devout member of the ultra-strict Plymouth Bretheren religeous sect, and who isn't even allowed to watch television in the form of documentary fiilms shown at school! Needless to say, Will has to keep his friendship with Lee as a secret from his family.
However, a big rift erupts between them with the arrival of French exchange students; one of whom - the very popular Didier Ravol (Jules Sitruk) - wants a role in the film! Will favours the idea, but Lee is far from keen.
Verdict: a highly entertaining; often moving, and at times very funny story of youth, friendship and families in the Britain of the 1980s.
Will Proudfoot is a shy, reserved young boy who is different from the other kids because his family is part of the Brethren, a religion that shuns the outside world, not allowing him to have friends at school or to watch television.
While in the hallway in school one day because he can't watch an educational film in class, Will gets into a fight with Lee Carter, a tough kid who gets into trouble all the time. Lee forces Will to help him make a homemade version of the Sylvester Stallone film First Blood, but after watching the original, Will is captivated by the movie and writes his own sequel, casting himself as the son of Rambo (he misspells the name of the character).
Will and Lee use their imagination and lots of grit to get the project off the ground, bonding as only blood brothers can. But soon the entire school wants to participate in the movie, including ultra-cool French exchange student Didier Revol, jeopardizing the integrity of the production as well as Will and Lee's growing friendship.
