Excerpt: ...There shall continue to be a bureau commissioner of labor statistics, which shall be under the immediate charge of a chief statistician, but subject to the direction and supervision of the commissioner of labor. who shall be appointed by the governor, by and with the advice and consent of the senate and shall hold his office for the term of three years, and receive an annual salary of three thousand dollars. He may appoint a deputy commissioner of labor statistics, at an annual salary of two thousand and five hundrcd dollars, and a chief clerk at an annual salary of two thousand dollars, and such other clerks and assistants as he may deem necessary and fix their salaries. The term of oflice of the successor of the commissioner in office when this chapter takes effect is abridged so as to expire on the last day of December preceding the time when such term would otherwise expire, and thereafter the tcrm of office of such commissioner shall begin on the first day of January. 31 /,1. Duties and powers.--The commissioner of labor statistics shall collect, assort, systematize and present in annual reports to the legislature, within ten days after the convening thereof in each year, statistical details in relation to all departments of labor in the state, especially in relation to the commercial, industrial, social and sanitary condition of workingmen and to the productive industries of the state.
