The grind, too, is a most unsociable chap unless you are in need of help on a lesson, or wish to discuss the possibilities of removing a condition. You condescend to approach him and open a conversation with a remark on the discouraging length of the morrow's Latin lesson. He warms to you immediately, he waxes confidential, he jokes, he revels in your favor, he open his heart to you--then you take from your pocket a " Prom." ticket, the price of which is only 83, and casually remark, "Of course you're going to the S 'Prom.'" But he isn't. He is going for the 2.19 train as fast as his legs can carry him. and you gaze at the retreating figure and ejaculate--" The greasy grind " It is idle to attempt to justify the grind. Like the manslayer taken in the act, he can be defended only upon the plea of insanity or self defense. There is of course strong presumptive evidence of insanity where a man seems to prefer the classroom to the athletic field, and the applause of the faculty to the acclaim of his fellow students, but on the other hand many grinds have been known to act and talk quite rationally in all other respects and upon all other subjects. Occasionally, indeed, we find one who in after life has risen to eminence and universal respect. Many a grind, however, is entitled to clemency as acting in self-defense. He realizes his unspeakable worthlessness, and now and then makes a feeble effort to rise from the depths of his obloquy, to be--oh, vain hope an athlete, or, failing that, even an idler, a "sport,"--anything rather than a greasy grind. He tries to enthuse over " ' Beefy ' Taylor's 40-foo1 shot throw "and speaks hopefully of the prospects of ..".
