The 1869 New Jersey vs. Rutgers football game was a college football game between the College of New Jersey (now the Princeton Tigers) and the Rutgers Scarlet Knights played on November 6, 1869. It is considered to be the first American football game ever played. Rutgers won the game by a score of 6-4. The game took place on November 6, 1869 at College Field (now the site of the College Avenue Gymnasium at Rutgers University) in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Because the game was played at a Rutgers' field, it was also played under Rutgers' rules.
