We may be competitors, some of us, yet we recognize in each other gentlemen, backed by firms of gentlemen, and when we each claim for our goods precedence, we do it in the firm belief that we speak the truth, and accord each other the right to the same belief and privilege. We are here not to malign each other, but to do our duty by the houses whence come our support, and in parting to give God speed to our fellow travelers; for there is a sympathy that makes us akin--a sympathy born of sacrifice, such a sacrifice as only those know who leave the happy home circle to meet daily the cold look of strangers and the undeserving sneer that often falls upon our profession. Fellow representatives, it is for us to outlive this false opinion. It is for us to show to the world that the drummer of the past is not the commercial traveler of the present. We are gentlemen, and as such we must be regarded. It is enough that we make the sacrifice we do, and unnecessary that our fight with the world should be regarded as less honorable than that of other bread winners. Therefore, Mr. Chairman, we say again that your kindness and courtesy is highly appreciated, and thank you for it. In selecting the article whereby you are to remember us, the committee has seen fit not to cane you, Mr. Chairman, as is frequently done at these meetings, but have selected for you a seat which, if not so exalted as the presidential chair, we trust may prove restful after the labors of the day are ended, and in which we ask...
