The subject of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering forms part of the curriculum for the students of Civil Engineering. A good text book for the subject is therefore necessary to facilitate proper understanding of the subject by the students.There are various books available on the subject of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, but the author feels that each of these available books is lacking in one respect or the other. As such none of the available books on the subject is complete in all respects. The author has therefore made an earnest attempt to bring out a book on the subject which may be reckoned as a complete text book in all respects.In the Seventh Edition of the book, the Author has revised the complete text of the book in S.I. Units Practically. The diagrams for the standard train of railway and highway bridge loads have been retained in metric units. The design of light gauge steel structural members in general building construction has been revised as per code of Practice IS: 801-1975. The various expressions for the determination of effective width of elements and for the allowable design stresses and other have been given in S.I. Units along with the respective expressions in metric units for the purpose of authenticity. The illustrative examples for the analysis of multistory buildings subjected to lateral loads have been explained by given free body diagrams for the members and joints for the internal forces.
