This is the story of Patch Adams, M.D., also known as the Clown, a social revolutionary whose medical career has been devoted to giving away health care -- one of the most expensive things in America -- for free. His lifetime quest to transform the health care system, without recourse to socialized medicine, is manifested in the Gesundheit Institute in northern West Virginia where he utilizes an "unorthodox" approach to medicine: laughter, humor, the philosophy of listening, not just heating, and doctor and patient as intimate, respecting partners. Founded in 1971 by Adams and a few colleagues, the aim of the Gesundheit Institute is to offer a free, full-scale hospital and health care community that is open to anyone from anywhere.
