Not illustrated. 1895 Excerpt: ...experiments were upon the yield and composition of various soiling crops and upon the influence of maturity upon these. Subsequently, for two years, elaborate investigations were carried on upon the composition, digestibility, yield, cost and feeding value for milk of the soiling crops in use upon the station farm as compared with pasturage. In connection with the latter phase of the subject, observations have been made upon the rate of growth of pasture grass at different times in the season, as well as experiments upon the relative feeding value of grass, green and dried, the results of which showed that the superiority of pasturage over dry feed is due to other influences than the simple succulence of the former. Other related work which may be classified here for convenience is--experiments upon the value of cotton seed meal as feed for milch cows, including its influence upon the quantity and quality of the product; experiments upon the digestibility of the so-called "cotton seed feed," and its feeding value, and experiments upon the digestibility of hay and grain when fed in varying quantities. Feeding Experiments.--The work just enumerated under the head of "crops," it will be noted, includes numerous digestion and feeding experiments. These were chiefly directed, however, toward ascertaining the relative value of certain crops or feeding stuffs, and only incidentally yielded results bearing upon the general question of methods of feeding. In the past two years, the activity of the Station has been turned more specifically to the investigation of feeding problems and especially of dairy feeding. Two experiments in successive years have been carried out upon the influence of the quantity of the food upon milk and butter producton. ...
