The Board of Engineers would return their sincere thanks to the different insurance companies of this city for upholding this department with that liberal and generous spirit that is best known to the citizens of St. Louis. We recommend to your honorable body the passage of an ordinance appropriating $500 for the purchase of hook and ladder apparatus. We suggest a change of the appropriation to put down cisterns, to putting down more fireplugs, and in so doing instruct the Superintendent of Waterworks to put them down at the intersection of every street, and in putting them down, not to attach two plugs within two squares of another on the same pipe, but to attach one plug on the pipe running east and west, and one on the pipe running north and south. An arrangement of this kind will give us a good supply of water for our engines. We would further suggest a change in the openings of the old fire-plugs, from two inches to three inches.
