He began writing on the San Francisco Chronicle as a reporter, but two years later made his home in New York. His first venture was a book of poems, Out of a Silver Flute (1896). His other works include: The Crystal Sceptre: A Story of Adventure (1901), When a Witch is Young (1901), Bruvver Jim's Baby (1904), The Ultimate Passion (1905), Dunny (1906), The Pillars of Eden (1909), The Furnace of Gold (1910), Thurley Ruxton (1911) and As it Was in the Beginning (1912).
