Vladimir Shileyko (Paperback)

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Vladimir Kazimirovich Shileyko (February 14, 1891 - October 5, 1930) was a Russian orientalist (assyriologist, hebraist) poet (acmeist) and translator. He was a second husband of Russian poet Anna Akhmatova. He is known for his Russian translations of the Epic of Gilgamesh. Epic of Gilgamesh is an epic poem from Mesopotamia and is among the earliest known works of literature. Scholars believe that it originated as a series of Sumerian legends and poems about the protagonist of the story, Gilgamesh king of Uruk, which were fashioned into a longer Akkadian epic much later. The most complete version existing today is preserved on 12 clay tablets from the library collection of 7th-century BC Assyrian king Ashurbanipal. The epic was originally titled in Akkadian Sha naqba muru ("He who Saw the Deep") or Sh tur eli sharr ("Surpassing All Other Kings"), the opening words in different versions.
