If the true facts could be ascertained I have no doubt that the gold so obtained costs quite three times its selling value. Departmental Revenue--Royalties.--The total Departmental revenue, after deducting the survey fees handed to the surveyors and other refunds, amounted to 22,041 9s. lOd. The royalties collected on gold, which represented only the half-year, as the Act authorising these only came into force at the end of June, amounted to 2,990 4s. 3d., and those on coal to 139 17s. 4d. Fees for Analytical Work, Sfc.--The fees received for work done for the public by the Government Analyst were 98 7s., and those for services by the officers of the Geological Survey and the sale of their publications amounted to 76 2s. 5d. Increase in Miners' Rights and Licenses.--There have been increases in the issue of miners' rights and mining licenses, 376 and 27 respectively. On the other hand, business licenses on the goldfields exhibit a decrease of 8, whilst the issue of such in the mineral districts has been the same as in the previous year. Revenue from Mineral Lands--Area of Leases.--The revenue collected under the Mineral Lands Act shows a falling off amounting to 135 3s. lOd. The total of gold-mining leases in force is 348, and the total area comprised in them 5,009 acres 1 rood 29 perches. The number of goldfields homestead leases has risen to 5,599, covering 41,431 acres of ground. Escort.--The only gold escort run at present is one from Georgetown, which conveyed during the year 27,697 oz. of gold.
