No; I do not remember that he did. 2612. To the best of your recollection, did Mr. Bates seem to admit that there was some necessity for this alteration? Yes, 1 think he practically admitted--and Mr. Cantwell also--that he thought that a metal CDnncction would be much better than a rubber one on account of the rubber sleeves having a tendency to break or tear. 2613. So far as you could gather, they were apparently contemplating that whatever expenditure would be incurred in effecting this alteration should be borne by the Queensland Government? I do not know that I would be quite justified in saying that, but, so far as my knowledge went, I was under the impression that it would be borne by the Queensland Government. David Morgan, Assistant Operator on the dredge "Hercules," examined: 2614. By the Chairman: What position do you occupy on the "Hercules "? Assistant operator at j. Morgan, present.----_--, 2615.
