His condition was as follows: Temp., 10454 degrees F.; pulse, 118; resp., 26; tongue heavily furred, breath offensive, terrible headache at base, lightning pains in every part of body, even to ends of fingers; had a hoarse cough, and bowels had not moved for two days. Diagnosis, la grippe. Treatment--Mild chloride in gr. doses with 2 grs. bic. soda every hour until four doses were taken. In two hours from last dose he was given a full dose of Epsom salts. In the meantime he was given ten grains pheno-bromate and repeated in two hours. On the morning of December 7 I made my second visit and found him resting easy; had but little pain: bowels had moved several times: he had slept several hours in the after pirt of the night, and, white sleep ing, had had a good sweat. Temperature now 100 2-5 degrees F.; pulse, 90, and respiration normal. I now prescribed 3 grs. quinine every 3 hours and alternated this with a cough mixture. Also left directions for them to repeat the pheno-bromate, if temperature went up and pain returned during the afternoon. Shortly after eleven o'clock that night I was sent for hurriedly and on my arrival I found him with a chill, temperature high, pulse rapid and suffering decided pain. On inquiry I learned that he was resting quietly in the evening, and had fallen into a sleep without repeating the drug, as ordered. I at once gave him 10 grains and had the dose repeated in one hour. This produced the desired effect. On the morning of the 8th his condition was very similar to that on the 7th. To guard against any further trouble we had him continue the quinine and alternate that with 5 grains of pheno-bromate every three hours, except during the after part of the night, w...
