Eastern Coal Company says that its understanding of the agreement was that the men were to be taken back as fast as needed, and that others were not to be discharged to make places for them. Eastern Coal Company striking employees return to strike headquarters and await instructions of the agent of the union. 17. Central Trades' and Labor Union votes to place the Eastern Coal Company on the unfair list, alleging that it has broken its agreement and has discriminated against union men. The trouble seems to be due to a misunderstanding on the part of the union of a verbal agreement made with the dealers by the international oflicer who assisted in settling the strike. It is reported that eight of the striking mule-spinners returned to work for the Manville Company this morning, making a total of twelve so far who have returned to work. 18. The coal dealers of Providence issue a signed statement that when the recent agreement was made it was clearly understood that the men who had faithfully served them during the strike would not be discharged, but that any vacancies existing should be filled without discriminating against union men. During a disturbance, in which two colored men on their way to work for the Eastern Coal Company are attacked, a man is shot twice in the head by one of the colored men, but his wounds are not serious. 20. Woonsocket Central Labor Union votes to put the Manville Company on the unfair list of the American Federation of Labor; It is reported that in consequence of the Brewery Workers' Union having voted not to handle...
