It is found in Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand. Its natural habitats are open seas and shallow seas. It is part of a species complex that also includes the giant guitarfish, the scientifically undescribed broadnose wedgefish and possibly the smoothnose wedgefish.
