A Sailor's Tale (Paperback)

A Sailor's Tale is a rolling tale, based on real people and real events, creatively coloured with characters of a more dubious pedigree, A Sailor's Tale illustrates what a group of men in their twenties got up to, sailing one of King George VI's lesser warships around the world during and just after the last war. For all of his life, Richard Moss had heard his father's tales of his time in the Navy aboard HMS Ness, in the epic Battle of the Atlantic and, later, clearing the East Indies of Japanese armourment, and so, when Raymond began to feel the weight of old age, falling and breaking his pelvis, shortly after recovering from a broken hip, they decided to write the tales down. Richard, author of two other books and ex-magazine editor, coloured it with characters who bring the tales to life and make this a really good read. The content of the book grew as Richard found a number of old shipmates around the world, added in their tales, researched and cross checked names and events and in spite of all that made some sense of it - the events all happened, whether in the place, order or time attributed to them is challengeable, but that won't stop you enjoying the tale. Never shy to come forward, Raymond's sense of fun and humour is reflected and strengthened by the same characteristics inherited by his son - the book includes actual photography and deck-top sketches as well as Raymond's robust opinions of his enemies of the time.
