Avoiding The Grim Reaper - How To Enjoy Your Epic (Paperback)

This book is a collection of real stories by people who have had scrapes with the Grim Reaper (i.e. near-death experiences ) in the wilderness.

They range from whitewater kayaking to hang-gliding to BASE jumping and more. The stories are told as "epics" - near-death experiences that make a good story afterwards. These are those thrilling stories!

The stories are interspersed with "Scenarios" of things that could potentially go wrong during an outing in the wilderness (e.g. a cobra bite, hyperthermia, lightning strike) and how to deal with such emergencies. It is a fun way to learn how to survive your epic, without needing to have one!

I was hooked from the first page!! It's a rollercoaster of excitement, tension and a celebration of the ability of human beings to get into crazy situations and still live to tell the tale. The gripping accounts of these epics are interspersed with informative chapters on mountain rescue in general, how to set up helicopter landing zones (LZ's) in the mountains and other equally important information. At no point did I feel bogged-down with medical or technical info. It's a very easy and exciting read. Rik has been a leading member of the MCSA technical rescue team for as long as I've known him, and his experience and expertise is plainly evident in his writing. To my climbing, hiking and trail-running friends, make a point of getting your sweaty, chalky hands on a copy of this book. It should be required reading for anybody venturing into our beautiful but dangerous mountains.
