1812 (Paperback)

Prior to the war of 1812, as the corner stone of the capitol building in the District of Columbia is being laid and lavish balls are an active part of social life, an Army Colonel and wife together with a Navy Lieutenant and his wife become closely acquainted. Then an accident while speeding with her hansom results in the Army Colonel's wife being paralyzed from the waist down giving the flirtatious Lieutenant's s wife the opportunity to tempt the handsome Colonel while her husband is at sea confronting pirates, storms and the mighty British navy. Slavery is common as is the cruel punishment of those who rebel against it. A constant threat of invasion by the British, a possible Indian uprising in the Ohio territory spurred by the Canadians and led by the Shawnee chief, Tecumseh, and the harassment of American shipping by the British, finally lead to a declaration of war. Piracy, war, romance and slavery all weave a story that culminates in a surprising ending.
