Unfulfilled Scripture was to Him a crown of thorns. He was pierced with sorrow till it was accomplished. But Scripture fulfilled is to Him a crown without thorns, all blooming with the blossoms of immortality, besprinkled with the dews of the Resurrection morning, and fragrant with the odours of Paradise. Now we see the highest application of that word, " His enemies will I clothe with shame; but upon Himself shall His crown flourish." The Resurrection of Christ shows that His sacrifice for our sins was accepted. Jesus was the sinners' Substitute, and He voluntarily went into the grasp of Divine justice, that we might go free. Justice caught Him as in a vice, and pressed Him above measure. In Gethsemane He was sore amazed, and His soul was exceeding sorrowful, even unto death. His sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. He cried, " O My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from Me." But it did not pass. The pressure increased, for it bruised Him on the cross, and brought Him into the dust of death. Then justice, being fully satisfied, opened wide its arms, that Jesus might go free. On the morning of the third day the gates of the grave were opened to Him, and the Living One came forth from among the dead: " Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that He should be holden of it." The Resurrection of Christ is the broad seal of His Father's approval on His whole work. Jesus died as our Substitute, and He rose as our Representative. " Come, see the place where the Lord lay."
