PREFACE In this book I have sought to give a glimpse of the musical life of Pliiladclphia during the 18th Century, laying especial stress on the secular music, a11d considering principally tllc German rnusic pro duced and performed, and emphasizing the high standard of musical taste at this time. While conlining myself to secular music, I thought it necessary in the first pcriod to treat somewhat in detail the religious rnusic, cspecialIy as the religious music was of more importance in the first half ccritury than the secular music. SO, too, 1 have gone into detail somewhat more in the first two periods than in the last, be cause these periods have not been so thoroughly investigated as the last period has. It may be objected by some, that I have not adequately considered the concert Iilc ol the last period. To these I wouId say that this period has been fully covered by 0. G. Sonneck in his Early Concert Life in such a manner that I, at least, could not improve upon it. I t is hoped that this book may help to correct the false im pression, that musical taste in America in the 18th century was an unknown quantity. This study was undcrtakcl at tllc suggestiotl of Prof. Nario D. Learned and to him I am especially grateful for aid and encouragement in preparing the work. To 0. G.
