Pulse radar systems act as the eyes of a ship during periods of reduced visibility and are thus one of the most important navigational aids. Increasingly, information obtained from radar is now processed by computers to create an automatic, anti-collision device (Automatic Radar Plotting Aid - ARPA) to give advance warning of potential navigation risk.
