This book portrays the lives of people living in Europe around the time of World War 1. Based on a true story, the novel portrays two families of different nationalities: one in Austria and the other in Slovenia, both part of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. When Janko returns after fighting for the Double Monarchy in Galici (Poland), he is stationed in Hannelore's town in Austria, where she is a high school teacher. They meet and fall madly in love but her parents are against the marriage, because he is from Slovenia.
