BOUT six o'clock we drove down and embarked in the little steamer which runs up the Fjord to Levanger. The passengers were chiefly country people, who, with their baskets and "tinnes," or wooden 2 Levanger. boxes for provision, crowded the deck. There were also one or two Norwegian gentlemen, amongst them Herr M, resident in Levanger, who most kindly gave us full information respecting our onward journey. The day was fine but breezy, notwithstanding which we much enjoyed the pretty scenery of the Fjord. About one o'clock we reached Levanger, and finding it impossible that my companion could ascend the steep gangway--a mere board, with ridges of wood placed across--the tide also being low, we waited until a boat was procured, into which we easily stepped, and were landed on the shore immediately in front of the neat little inn of the place. We had dinner, after which post carioles were brought to the door. We had sent back our own before embarking for the North, in consequence of Springless Carioles. 3 the difficulty of getting rid of them in Sweden, where they are rarely used. Herr M fulfilled his promise of furnishing us with written directions for our journey, and enclosed a letter to the hotelmaster at Ostersund.
