Lymphocytes share with metastatic tumour cells the ability to travel through circulation and extravasate into solid tissue. The extravasation of T, B and NK cells is an intricate choreography of adhesive, migratory and secretory behaviours, all regulated by signals conveyed by endothelium, stroma and inflammatory cytokines. Knowledge of these behaviours is useful in metastasis research, as some tumour invasion mechanisms may be derived from normal lymphocyte extravasation processes. The design of antimetastatic immunotherapy can also be enhanced by an understanding of lymphocytic extravasation and its modulation by immunological stimulation and tumour microenvironmental factors. This publication is devoted to reviews of recent research on lymphocyte extravasation and its component processes, including adhesion to ascular endothelium, transendothelial migration and degradation and penetration of stroma. Where pertinent, the authors have also drawn mechanistic parallels between lymphocytes and other extravasating cell types, both normal and malignant.
