The Holy Spirit is the sanctifier of all who believe in Christ. " If any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his." Here is a test, whereby we may judge ourselves; " the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance."! If we do not possess, in some degree, these marks of regeneration, we are deceiving ourselves, if we think we are the children of God; and the sooner we examine into our spiritual state the better. Holiness is a progressive work; we do not become established Christians the moment we have accepted Christ as our " wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption/' although from that instant we stand in a new and blessed relation towards God; but the work must, from that same instant, begin?the Christian mustbuckle on his armour, although he may not boast, as he that taketh it off;" he must walk " after the Spirit," however feeble and faltering his steps may be; and he must feel, in the warfare between the Spirit and the flesh within him, that the Spirit is gradually, but surely, gaining the victory. He alone can take of the things of God, and show them unto us.f He alone can bring to our remembrance all things whatsoever Christ hath told us.J He alone can open our minds, and influence our hearts to perceive, and accept, and apply, and rejoice in the rich treasures of the word of God. The Holy Spirit alone possesses the key that unlocks the inexhaustible garners of Holy Writ; to those who seek His help and teaching, the portals of true wisdom are thrown open, and " unsearchable riches " are freely given to the inquiring soul; but to those who lean unto their own unders...
