Children Of Men
starring Clive Owen and Julianne Moore is one of my top 10 favourite movies of all time, and visionary director Alfonso Cuaron manages to outdo that previous effort with Gravity
, a pulse-pounding, spellbindingly beautiful sci-fi thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat then throws you off of it!
Sandra Bullock and George Clooney play two astronauts who get stranded in space after their ship gets destroyed. They're drifting in space and stuck without any ability to communicate to anyone back home on Earth. It's a simple premise for a movie, and I'll admit to being skeptical regarding the plot and how it would be fleshed out to a feature length, but my fears were proven to be unfounded. Gravity was one of the most thrilling movies I've ever seen. (EVER!) It's definitely MY favourite movie of 2013, and it proved to be widely praised as well as it was the most critically acclaimed blockbuster of the year. (Plus it's sitting at number 6 on the list of the biggest money makers at the box office for 2013).
The direction is first rate, with Cuaron already renowned for multiple "unbroken" camera tracking shots on Children Of Men, which he here again manages to achieve, only on a grander and more majestic scale. Watching the movie, you literally feel like you ARE in space with the characters! And speaking of the characters, they are vividly brought to life by the two movie stars. Clooney is adept at the swagger and charm required in his role, but it is Bullock who knocks it out of the park (or rather the galaxy!). Her emotional performance is unlike anything you've ever seen from her before, and she definitely deserves an Oscar Award for Best Actress for this portrayal!
I cannot recommend this movie highly enough! It's a masterpiece of movie magic, crafted at its finest by people who love movies that can dazzle, which in this "seen it all" day and age is becoming rare. Gravity is the best movie of the year, needs to be seen on the biggest TV screen possible with all the lights turned down and it's a movie DEFINITELY worth owning. (5 out of 5, by Carlisle Johnson)
Academy Award winners Sandra Bullock and George Clooney star in this heart-pounding thriller that pulls you into the infinite and unforgiving realm of deep space.
Dr. Ryan Stone is a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski in command. But on a seemingly routine mission, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalski completely alone - tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness.
The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth… and any chance for rescue. And as fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left.
But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.
(2014 Oscar winner for: Best Director; Best Cinematography; Best Editing; Best Visual Effects; Best Sound Editing; Best Sound Mixing; Best Original Music Score)
