Extract from Mr Muston's letter of 12th April 1875, shewing the spiritual, physical, and practical blessings of Christianity amongst the Santhals: --"I mounted my horse at one o'clock, and rode in to Ebenezer by invitation. About four o'clock we all adjourned to the church, the occasion being the marriage of three of Mrs Boerresen's school girls. Before service commenced, however, I sent for to my room Nemai, one of the bridegrooms, and his bride Kate. The former studied for two years under the civil surgeon in Soory, and since June last year has had sole charge of the missionaries' dispensary, and looking after the numerous sick that come there for aid. He is a very fine young fellow, and a true Christian, and a most hardworking, trustworthy, upright young man--altogether a fine character that would do credit to any nationality. I had formed a strong attachment to him and his bride, and so had decided on giving each of them a wedding present, for they had been engaged about eighteen months or two years. At Christmas, Mr Boerresen had given him a Bengali book on medicine, but as there are many words in it he did not understand, as well as in the Bengali Bible, I gave him a Bengali Dictionary for the use of Bengalis, so that he could turn up any word he did not know, and find, perhaps, some other meaning of it that he did know. He was extremely pleased and gratified, and has the book in constant use. His bride, Kate, was one of the four girls which Mrs Boerresen got from a Miss Crawford's school in Santipore, Orissa, some six years or so ago. The Santhals here would then not trust their daughters to the missionaries, so this plan was adopted to form the nucleus of a girls' school, and has succeeded very ...
