This is a simple story which explores the beauty and precious value of all living things. We are reminded that everything on Earth was placed here for an important purpose, and that all of God's creations are equal in their potential to gain eternal life. Alan Sullivan is a young man who is struggling with the death of his beloved pet. In the course of a year's time he is consoled by his father and befriended by a kind-hearted construction foreman who is reminded of his own boyhood loss. Shorty Dawson also mourns for the passing of his wife, Marie, and shares many of Alan's pains and frustrations. Their lives are transformed through encounters with a nameless and mysterious Mexican boy who is cheerful, magical, and wise -- far beyond his youthful appearance.
