Comparatively little of the silver of the mines is derived from native silver, most of the silver of commerce being obtained from some of the following forms. The principal silver ores are: ARGENTITE_--(Silver glance or silver sulphide.) Largely associated with lead sulphide or galena. Composition when pure, silver 87 per cent, sulphur 13 per cent. KERATE--(Kerargerite, horn silver.) Anhydrous chloride of silver, pure specimens containing 75.3 per cent of silver and 24.7 per cent chlorine. STEPHANlTE--(Brittle silver ore.) Anhydrous sulphide of silver and antimony. Black or iron_grey. When pure contains 71 per cent silver, the rest being antimony, with usually iron and copper. RED SILVER ORE, or RUBY SlLVER--Is an ore containing arsenic or antimony, sometimes both. That containing only antimony is dark_red and known as Pyrargyrite; it contains 59.8 per cent silver, 17.7 per cent sulphur and 22.5 per cent antimony. It occurs generally in crystals. When the silver sulphide is associatedwith arsenic only, the color is light-red and it is known as Proustite. It contains 65.5 per cent of silver.
