Anne and her husband have, in their early seventies, moved from their home of forty plus years to an apartment in a small suburban village where, she thinks, "I can spend the rest of my life, our lives, in relative peace, but life keeps coming at me. Good thing, maybe. Keeps the blood moving." Through flash back and reflection the novel shows us the life that has shaped Anne as well as the affect she has had on the lives of others. It is a story of the doubts, fears, joys and occasional revelations that are the ambivalent stuff of daily life for one woman at the beginning of her eighth decade.
