It was my responsibility to find appropriate music for my friends who gathered here to sing women like myself, neighbors with husband, children, and home. From the beginning I was both surprised and shocked at the type of choral literature offered by the music publishers. It was childish, trivial, far too sentimental for these intelligent women who took time out of their busy lives for spiritual exaltation. It was, indeed, listed in many catalogues as music intended for womens andchildrens voices I was amazed that the modern woman, with her high educa tion, her personal liberty, and her active participation in the life of the community, was satisfied to sing, in a group, music manifestly inferior to other works of the same composers for solo voice or mixed chorus. Almost none of the music we sang was composed by women...
