Excerpt: The Sisoy Veliky (Russian: ) was a pre-dreadnought battleship of the Imperial Russian Navy, the fifth battleship built according to the 1881 shipbuilding program, and the second Russian battleship built to a pre-dreadnought standard with four 12-inch (300 mm) guns in two armored turrets and 6-inch (150 mm) secondary artillery mounted in the casemates of her central citadel. She was named after the Battle of Hogland which coincided with the day of St. Sisoes the Great of Egypt in the Orthodox calendar. The construction of Sisoy was marred by organizational, logistical and engineering problems and dragged on for more than five years. Sisoy was commissioned in October 1896 with an appalling number of design and construction faults, and only a few of them were fixed during her lifetime.
