Excerpt: Final Destination is an American horror franchise that consists of five splatter films, ten novels (three of which are novelizations of the first three films, another two of which are either recalled or cancelled), and two comic-books composed of six issues in total. Each medium features a protagonist (most likely Alex Browning) whom experiences a premonition of himself/herself and several others dying in an accident (e.g. plane explosion, pile-up, etc.), only to escape the event together with a handful of characters moments before it turns into reality. The survivors later meet their demises through a series of elaborate and often gory scenarios that frequently resemble Rube Goldberg machines in their complexity. Despite depicting homicide, the series is noteworthy amongst others in the horror genre in that the "villain" of the movies is not the stereotypical slashers or beasts, but the entity Death itself (occasionally 'seen' as a fleeting shadow) which manipulates the environment in deadly ways with the intent of reclaiming the lives of the survivors (usually through warning premonitions). As of Final Destination 5, there are 506 known deaths in the films, 183 known in the novels, and 754 known in the comic books, a sum of 1,443 known deaths in the entire franchise. Counted deaths only include those who perished in the protagonist's initial premonition (referred to as Death's List) and those who died along the survivors. Characters are listed according to the medium they were shown, and are arranged by chronological appearance. Unnecessary characters are excluded, i.e. they do not affect the protagonist heavily.
