After serving as the mayor of Bucharest from June 2000 until December 2004, he was elected President in the Romanian Presidential Elections of 2004 and inaugurated on December 20, 2004. He was re-elected president for a second 5-year term in 2009, amidst allegations of electoral fraud that were dismissed by the courts. In April 2007, B sescu became the first president in Romania's history to be officially suspended from office, but he was reinstated a month later in a public referendum by a 3-to-1 margin.
