As in the rest of New England, few governmental powers have been granted to the county. The county is an expedient way of grouping and distributing state-controlled governmental services. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 721 square miles (1,868 km ).It is the fifth largest county in Vermont.
