He was elected as Senator in 1993 (second in poll with 14,388 votes) and re-elected in 1999 (top of poll with 15,212 votes) and 2005 (top of poll with 15,131 votes). At the expiry of six months absence from Jersey 2009-2010 his Senatorial seat was declared vacant in accordance with electoral law, and a by-election was called.
