In the June of the following year a revolt broke out which was suppressed, and the island was relinquished by the British on the 22"d of October, the people having declared for France. The i2lh Light Dragons after leaving Corsica was quartered at Civita Vecchia and was complimented by Pope Pius VI for its conduct. The medal under review was presented tojLieutenantSainthill, and differs in type to the reverse of that illustrated in Tancred (facing page 309), which was granted to Captain George Madden. Gibson and Tancred describthe medal as reading on the obverse--PIVS SEXTVS. PONT. MAX. A. XVII. Rev. Ceres seated with cornucopia; the sources of three rivers below. AGRO. POMPTIN. COLONIS. REST. Exergue, MDCCXCI., which according to the reading on the reverse was a medal struck to commemorate the converting of some marsh land into cultivated ground. The Sainthill medal was for the restoration and fortification of the harbour of Civita Vecchia, it is therefore strange that both these authors should give particulars of the event of the medal given to Sainthill which is dated 1793, whilst illustrating and describing the one given to Madden dated 1791 the only conclusion that I can therefore come to is, that an accident must have happened to one of the dies, but whether more than one of either designs were issued, I have been unable to ascertain up to the time of writing. The following are copies of the letters received and replies forwarded in respect to the Sainthill medal. According to the letter from the Chambers of the Vatican only twelve medals were prepared, and the one illustrated is unique as a naval decoration. C. W.
