Rugby union is not the most popular sport in South Africa, contrary to popular belief. The most popular sport in South Africa by far is association football. This is particularly popular with the black South Africans who constitute the majority of the population. Cricket is also a very popular sport (second most popular sport in South Africa) in the country and the national team is nicknamed The Proteas.
