The collection represented all the formations but the Tertiary, Cretaceous, the various Sandslones, and the 4th Magnesian Limestone. The fossils were most perfect, beautiful, neatly arranged in formations and genera, each labelled with name, locality, formation, and collector. The importance of such a collection, thus arranged, can be somewhat appreciated when it is remembered that these fossils are the unerring guide of the Geologist in his labors among the Rocks._ When they are present in the rocks, he who knows them and their import goes forward with confidence that these messages (records left by the Creator in the rocks during their formation) will lead only to true and reliable conclusions. Each fossil is a chapter in the record of creation; each leaves a record of its own age, the age of the rock in which it was found, and the physical condition of the earth at that period. Some declare with certainty the position of our Coal beds--others point out the strata of Hydraulic Limestone--THIRD ANNUAL mm. 119 and others still, indicate the veins of Copper, and Lead, and Zinc, and Cobalt.
