Not illustrated. 1917 Excerpt: ...why villi are not discoverable in chorioepitheliomata of the testis, if these tumors actually do originate in this way. An answer may be found in the cases reported by Launois, Masson, and Pinard7, and by Fritze8, who found, in metastases, structures so closely resembling chorionic villi that they were often quite indistinguishable from those normally belonging to the fetal membranes. Unfortunately the former case is not entirely conclusive, because the authors were unable to examine the testis, for some reason not stated. They had no doubt, however, that it was the seat of a chorioepithelioma, as it had been enlarging gradually for a year. Testicular chorioepitheliomata are described by Risel (l. c.) as follows. Both the primary growth and its metastases are hemorrhagic, resembling a mixture of old and fresh blood clots, and are thus very similar in appearance to the chorioepithelioma of pregnancy. As in these latter tumors, the hemorrhage is caused by invasion of the vessels, and metastasis takes place by way of the blood stream. Fig. 5. Case 69. Squamous epithelium and keratin, representing the ectodermal elements-x 75 Fig. 6. Case 69. Glandular epithelium elaborating a mucoid secretion (Gastrointestinal tract?) and representing an entodermal element-x 400 Fig. 7. Case 69. Transition between squamous and glandular epithelium, a characteristic feature of teratomata. x 145 Fig. 8. Case 69. Transition between squamous and glandular epithelium-x 75 The teratoid nature of chorioepitheliomata of the testis is not always easily demonstrable, for the chorioepitheliomatous portion may almost or quite overgrow and repress the teratomatous constituents; on the other hand, a small area of chorioepithelioma in a teratoma may be readily overlooked.
