Living Alone (Paperback)

Stella Benson (18921933) was an English feminist, travel writer, and novelist. Benson was a supporter of womens suffrage and during World War I she supported the war effort by gardening and working with poor women in London. These efforts inspired Benson to write the novels I Pose (1915), This Is the End (1917) and Living Alone (1919). Living Alone opens in a bare room with six women sitting at a table. These were committee women wanting to work for the war effort. Suddenly a young woman rushes in and dives under the table. When questioned she admits to stealing a bun and the baker was chasing her. She continued by saying that she had money an hour ago, but her money had disappeared when she put it in war funds. Here is where the tale begins.
