Juxtaposing haiku and prints on the theme of flowers and trees through the four seasons, this book recreates a mediative walk through a garden over the course of a year. Over 120 haiku by poets such as Basho, Issa and Buson are included, as well as reproductions of prints by Kitagawa Utamaro, Ike no Taiga and Hanabusa Itcho. The introduction discusses the challenges of translating haiku into English and offers a brief essay on Japanese gardens and Japanese views of the flora and the seasons. An appendix identifies and provides brief biographical information on all the poets and painters.
