Each of the titles in this series examines a major historical watershed. The authors recount the chain of events leading up to the event and the repercussions, both immediate and long-term. They also evaluate the concept of a turning point, assessing in what way this event qualifies. Differing interpretations are discussed, showing how history is informed by a complicated web of divergent views. The events covered in the series are: the fall of the Bastille in 1789; the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand in Sarajevo in 1914; the Cuban missile crisis in 1962; the Long March across China by members of the Red Army and Communist Party in 1934-5; and the Irish famine of 1845-50.
