The Chieko Poems (Japanese, Paperback)

The major influence and subject of Takamura's work was Naganuma Chieko, an early member of the feminist movement Seiosha. They were married in 1914 and modeled their relationship on sexual equality. In 1931, Chieko began to show signs of schizophrenia, which led to an attempted suicide. In 1935, Takamura was forced to commit his wife to a hospital, and she died of tuberculosis in 1938. These poems, centered on their relationship, are translated here for the first time in English.
