The circumstance, however, led the minister to address her with extreme earnestness, entreating her to use the opportunities while she had them, seeing that she might be called into the presence of God ere another year, or even another Lord's-day, came round. She alluded affectingly to this warning upon her dying bed. One of the Rector's daughters--now a Missionary's wife in a far-off land--had the charge of the class to which Betsy belonged, and went frequently to Betsy's cottage to urge her return to the school; but in vain. For the four last Sundays of her life she had not attended the house of God. It was not, as we feared, that she had given up all care for her soul, Bonar's Night oj Weeping. for she had been observed to retire often to her own little chamber with her Bible. It might be that the solemn transaction going on at that time between God and her soul caused her to be much alone. She afterwards remembered and regretted that she had slighted the means of grace, while she might have availed herself of them. Through God's love and pity she wcs led to a sincere repentance of her past folly and indifference, and the promise was revealed to her that God had also put away her sins. She saw herself a lost sinner, but by fait'., she beheld he Saviour bearing the punishment for her on the cross, and satisfying God by His perfect obedience. In real sorrow of heart she said, "I will confess my transgression unto the Lord;" and He forgave the iniquity of her sin. While she was yet speaking, God her Father heard her prayer. The thick cloud was blotted out, and the Sun of Righteousness arose with healing in His wings. The light of God's favour brightened her short jouriiey through the valley of the shadow of...
