The Oxford reading tree for Southern Africa is an outcomes-based programme, providing a wealth of resources for the foundation phase of learning. It centres on original and superbly illustrated stories that engage learners and provide the context for achieving the specific outcomes of the Literacy learning programme. The teacher's guide offers a variety of activities and classroom management guidelines with an emphasis on intgrating outcomes from literacy, life skills and numeracy. It includes over 60 photocopiable worksheets, and shows how the storyboooks relate to the foundation phase programme and phase organisers. Assessment criteria are indicated for each activity. The learners are exposed to a variety of texts through the Playscripts and Fact Finders. Fact Finders develop strategies for reading for information, preparing learners for research tasks and using language for learning across the curriculum. Playscripts give learners an opportunity to use language in a fun and dramatic way, and to learn stage conventions.
