THE DEANSHIP N the 26th of October, 1878, the following letter was dispatched to the rector of St. Mark's, Philadelphia, by the Trustees of the General Theological Seminary, New York: New York, Oftober 26th, 1878. To The Rev. Eugene A. Hoffman, D.D. Rector of St. Mark's Church, Philadelphia, Pa. Reverend and Dear Sir: At a meeting of the Trustees of the General Theological Seminary, held in this city on the 23rd ult., we the undersigned were appointed a special committee, with instructions to announce to you the fact of your election to be Dean of that institution and to request that you will accept the post. The resignation of the office of Dean by the Rt. Rev. the Bishop of Springfield does not take effect until the 15th day of June, 1879. Notwithstanding this, it is deemed important that we should be informed of your decision at as early a day as may be convenient. The expression of personal sentiments in such a communication as this may not, perhaps, be strictly in order; still, we cannot resist availing ourselves of the opportunity to say that in view of your well known ability and attainments, your long and approved service in the Church, and your constant interest in the Seminary, the Trustees have, in our opinion, made a wise selection, and we trust that nothing will prevent you from acceding to the wishes of those who have given you so marked an assurance of their confidence and regard.
